| She walked along the Cromwell Road; and every room
she passed and peered into seemed to be a dining-room where people sat
eating under steel engravings, with thick yellow lace curtains, and
mahogany sideboardsAt last she reached the Natural History Museum; she
used to like it when she was a childBut the first thing she saw when
she went in was a stuffed hare standing on sham snow with pink glass
eyesSomehow it made her shiver all overPerhaps it would be better
when dusk fellShe went home and sat over the fire, without a light,
and tried to imagine that she was out alone on a moor; and there was a
stream rushing; and beyond the stream a dark woodBut she could get no
further than the streamAt last she squatted down on the bank on the
wet grass, and sat crouched in her chair, with her hands dangling empty,
and her eyes glazed, like glass eyes, in the firelightThen there was
the crack of a gunShe started as if she had been shotIt was only
Ernest, turning his key in the doorShe waited, tremblingHe chloe bag bay came in
and switched on the lightThere he stood, tall, handsome, rubbing his
hands that were red with cold
"Sitting in the dark?" he said
"Oh, Ernest, Ernest!" she cried, starting up in her chair
"Well, what's up now?" he asked briskly, warming his hands at the fire she faltered, glancing wildly at him out of her
great startled eyesI've lost her!"
Ernest frownedHe pressed his lips tight together"Oh, that's what's
up, is it?" he said, smiling rather grimly at his wifeFor ten seconds
he stood there, silent; and she waited, feeling hands tightening at the
back of her neck
"Yes," he said at length He straightened his tie
at the looking-glass over the mantelpiece
"Caught in a trap," he said, "killed," and sat down and read the
newspaper
So that was the end of that marriage
THE MAN WHO LOVED HIS KIND
Trotting through Deans Yard that afternoon, Prickett Ellis ran straight
into Richard Dalloway, or rather, just as they were passing, the covert
side glance which each was cartier watches women casting on the other, under his hat, over his
shoulder, broadened and burst into recognition; they had not met for
twenty yearsThey had been at school togetherAnd what was Ellis
doing? The Bar? Of course, of course--he had followed the case in the
papersBut it was impossible to talk hereWouldn't he drop in that
evening(They lived in the same old place--just round the corner)One
or two people were coming"An awful swell now," said
Richard
"Good--till this evening then," said Richard, and went his way, "jolly
glad" (that was quite true) to have met that queer chap, who hadn't
changed one bit since he had been at school--just the same knobbly,
chubby little boy then, with prejudices sticking out all over him, but
uncommonly brilliant--won the Newcastle
Prickett Ellis, however, as he turned and looked at Dalloway
disappearing, wished now he had not met him or, at least, for he had
always liked him personally, hadn't promised to come to this party
Dalloway was married, gave parties; wasn't his sort at omega constellation allHe would
have to dressHowever, as the evening drew on, he supposed, as he had
said that, and didn't want to be rude, he must go there
But what an appalling entertainment! There was Joynson; they had nothing
to say to each otherHe had been a pompous little boy; he had grown
rather more self-important--that was all; there wasn't a single other
soul in the room that Prickett Ellis knewSo, as he could not
go at once, without saying a word to Dalloway, who seemed altogether
taken up with his duties, bustling about in a white waistcoat, there he
had to standIt was the sort of thing that made his gorge riseThink
of grown up, responsible men and women doing this every night of their
lives! The lines deepened on his blue and red shaven cheeks as he leant
against the wall in complete silence, for though he worked like a horse,
he kept himself fit by exercise; and he looked hard and fierce, as if
his moustaches were dipped in frostHe bristled; he gratedHis
meagre dress clothes made him look unkempt, balenciaga motorcycle handbag insignificant, angular
Idle, chattering, overdressed, without an idea in their heads, these
fine ladies and gentlemen went on talking and laughing; and Prickett
Ellis watched them and compared them with the Brunners who, when they
won their case against Fenners' Brewery and got two hundred pounds
compensation (it was not half what they should have got) went and spent
five of it on a clock for himThat was a decent sort of thing to do;
that was the sort of thing that moved one, and he glared more severely
than ever at these people, overdressed, cynical, prosperous, and
compared what he felt now with what he felt at eleven o'clock that
morning when old Brunner and MrsBrunner, in their best clothes,
awfully respectable and clean looking old people, had called in to give
him that small token, as the old man put it, standing perfectly upright
to make his speech, of gratitude and respect for the very able way in
which you conducted our case, and MrsBrunner piped up, how it was all
due to him they miu miu nappa felt |

| I bought the identical condo next door to his for $50,000He told me he's waiting for the price to go upI told him that his profit is made when you buy, not when you sellHe shopped with a real estate broker who owns no property of her ownI shopped at the foreclosure department of a bankI paid $500 for a class on how to do thisMy neighbor thought that the $500 for a real estate investment class was too expensiveHe said he could not afford it, and he couldn't afford the time So he waits for the price to go up
?I look for people who want to buy first, then I look for someone who wants to sellA friend was looking for a certain piece of landHe had the money and did not have the timeI found a large piece of land larger than what my friend wanted to buy, fendi b bag tied it up with an option, called my friend and he wanted a piece of itSo I sold the piece to him and then bought the landI kept the remaining land as mine for freeMoral of the story: Buy the pie and cut it in piecesMost people look for what they can afford, so they look too smallThey buy only a piece of the pie, so they end up paying more for less Small thinkers don't get the big breaksIf you want to get richer, think bigger first
Retailers love giving volume discounts, simply because most business people love big spenders So even if you're small, you can always think bigWhen my company was in the market for computers, I called several friends and asked them if they were ready to buy alsoWe then went to different dealers and negotiated a great deal vintage omega watches because we wanted to buy so manyI have done the same with stocksSmall people remain small because they think small; act alone, or don't act all
?Learn from historyAll the big companies on the stock exchange started out as small companies Colonel Sanders did not get rich until after he lost everything in his 60s Bill Gates was one of the richest men in the world before he was 30

These are just a few of the things I have done and continue to do to recognize opportunitiesThe important words being "done" and "do"As repeated many times throughout the book, you must take action before you can receive the financial rewardsAct now!

How To Pay for a Child's College Education for $7000
As the book draws to top chanel bags a close and approaches publication, I would like to share a final thought with youThe main reason I wrote this book was to share insights into how increased financial intelligence can be used to solve many of life's common problemsWithout financial training, we all too often use the standard formulas to get through life, such as to work hard, save, borrow and pay excessive taxesToday we need better information
I use the following story as a final example of a financial problem that confronts many young families todayHow do you afford a good education for your children and provide for your own retirement? It is an example of using financial intelligence instead of hard work to achieve the same goal
A friend of mine was griping one day about how hard purse logo it was to save money for his four children's college educationHe was putting $300 away in a mutual fund each month and had so far accumulated about $12,000 He estimated he needed $400,000 to get four children through collegeHe had 12 years to save for it, since his oldest child was then 6 years of age
The year was 1991, and the real estate market in Phoenix was terriblePeople were giving houses awayI suggested to my classmate that he buy a house with some of the money in his mutual fundThe idea intrigued him and we began to discuss the possibilityHis primary concern was that he did not have the credit with the bank to buy another house, since he was so over-extendedI assured him that there were other ways to finance a property other than through the chanel classic bags ba |

|
| It's the Roaring '20s one more timeAnd while I am glad people have been getting richer and richer, I only caution that in the long run, it's not how much you make, it's how much you keep, and how many generations you keep it
So when people ask, "Where do I get started?" or "Tell me how to get rich quick," they often are greatly disappointed with my answerI simply say to them what my rich dad said back to me when I was a little kid"If you want to be rich, you need to be financially literate
That idea was drummed into my head every time we were togetherAs I said, my educated dad stressed the importance of reading books, while my rich dad stressed the need to master financial literacy
If you are going to build the Empire State Building, the first thing you need to do is dig a deep hole dior rasta and pour a strong foundationIf you are going to build a home in the suburbs, all you need to do is pour a 6-inch slab of concreteMost people, in their drive to get rich, are trying to build an Empire State Building on a 6-inch slab
Our school system, having been created in the Agrarian Age, still believes in homes with no foundationDirt floors are still the rageSo kids graduate from school with virtually no financial foundationOne day, sleepless and deep in debt in suburbia, living the American Dream, they decide that the answer to their financial problems is to find a way to get rich quick
Construction on the skyscraper beginsIt goes up quickly, and soon, instead of the Empire State Building, we have the Leaning Tower of SuburbiaThe sleepless nights return
As for Mike and me in our chloe paddington handbag adult years, both of our choices were possible because we were taught to pour a strong financial foundation when we were just kids
Now, accounting is possibly the most boring subject in the worldIt also could be the most confusingBut if you want to be rich, long term, it could be the most important subjectThe question is, how do you take a boring and confusing subject and teach it to kids? The answer is, make it simpleTeach it first in pictures
My rich dad poured a strong financial foundation for Mike and meSince we were just kids, he created a simple way to teach usFor years he only drew pictures and used wordsMike and I understood the simple drawings, the jargon, the movement of money, and then in later years, rich dad began adding numbersToday, Mike has gone on to master much more complex chanel purse white and sophisticated accounting analysis because he has had toHe has a billion-dollar empire to runI am not as sophisticated because my empire is smaller, yet we come from the same simple foundationIn the following pages, I offer to you the same simple line drawings Mike's dad created for usThough simple, those drawings helped guide two little boys in building great sums of wealth on a solid and deep foundationYou must know the difference between an asset and a liability, and buy assetsIf you want to be rich, this is all you need to knowThis may sound absurdly simple, but most people have no idea how profound this rule isMost people struggle financially because they do not know the difference between an asset and a liability
"Rich people acquire assetsThe poor and middle class acquire liabilities, buy miu miu but they think they are assets"
When rich dad explained this to Mike and me, we thought he was kiddingHere we were, nearly teenagers and waiting for the secret to getting rich, and this was his answerIt was so simple that we had to stop for a long time to think about it
"What is an asset?" asked Mike
"Don't worry right now," said rich dad"Just let the idea sink inIf you can comprehend the simplicity, your life will have a plan and be financially easyIt is simple; that is why the idea is missed
"You mean all we need to know is what an asset is, acquire them and we'll be rich?" I asked
Rich dad nodded his head
"If it's that simple, how come everyone is not rich?" I asked"Because people do not know the difference
between an asset and a liability
I remember asking, "How could adults be so classic chanel quilted bag si |

| The hallway with its eight doors
seemed smaller to Lina than it had when she was a

scuffed gray, and there was a cloud of finger smudges
around the doorknob of every door
They went into Miss Thorn's room and, out of
habit, sat at their old desks"I don't think they'll look
for us here," said Doon"If they do, we can crawl into
the paper cabinet He set his pack down next to him
on the floor
For a while they just sat there, getting their breath

dim--the only light came from beneath the blind over
the tiffany canada window
"Those posters," Lina said after a whileEveryone will see them
"What will they do to us if they catch us?"
"I don't knowSomething to keep us from telling
what we knowPut us in the Prison Room, maybe
Lina ran her finger along the B carved in the desktop
It felt like a very long time since she'd last sat at
this desk"We can't hide in here forever," she said"Just until it's time for the
SingingThen when everyone is gathered in Harken

Won't we? I haven't really thought about it--I haven't

"But the guards chanel purse white are always there at the Singing,
standing next to the mayor," said Lina"They'd grab us

Doon's eyebrows came together in a dark lineSo what will we do?"
It was like finding yourself on a dead-end street, Lina thoughtShe stared
blankly at the things that had once been her daily
companions--the teacher's desk, the stacks of paper, The Book of the City of Ember on its special shelfThe old words ran through her head: "There is no place but

knew now that this wasn't trueThere was someplace

As if Doon had read her thoughts, he looked up
"Go where?" she said, though she knew right away
what he meant
"Wherever the river leads," he saidHe gestured
to the pillowcase sack"I packed up my bag this morning--I'm all readyI'm sure I have enough for
you, too
Lina felt her heart shrink a little"Go by ourselves?"
she said"Without telling anyone?"
"We will tell them Doon was on his feet nowHe
went to the cabinet and got a sheet of paper"We'll
write a note explaining everything--a note to someone
we trust, someone who'll believe us
207
"But I can't just leave," said Una"How could I
leave Poppy? sac hermes kelly And not even say goodbye to her? Not
know where I'm going, or if I'm ever coming back?
How could you go without saying goodbye to your

"Because," said Doon, "once they find the boats,
the rest of Ember will follow usIt's not as if we're
leaving them forever He strode across the room and
rummaged in Miss Thorn's desk"Who shall we write
the message to?"
Lina wasn't sure about this idea, but she couldn't,
at the moment, think of a better oneSo she said, "We
could write it to ClaryShe's seen the Instructions
She'll believe what we sayAnd she lives close by--just

| She didn't, so Lina went on"It
isn't like Ember; it's white and gleamingThe buildings
are tall and sort of sparkleEverything is bright, not
just inside the buildings but all around them, too, even
up in the skyI know it's just my imagination, but it
feels real

Clary said, "Hmmm," and then she said, "Where
would such a city be?"
"That's what I don't knowI
keep thinking there's a door somewhere, maybe out in
the Unknown Regions--a door that leads out of
Ember, and then behind the door a road
Clary just shrugged her shoulders"I don't know,"
she said"I have to get back to work She handed Lina the bean seed, took a little pot
from a shelf, scooped some dirt into it, and handed the
pot to Lina, too"Stick fendi spy the bean in here and water it
every day," she said"It looks like nothing, like a little
white stone, but inside it there's lifeThat must be a
sort of clue, don't you think? If we could just figure it
out
Lina took the seed and the pot"Thank you," she
saidShe wanted to give Clary a hug but didn't, in case
it would embarrass herInstead, she just said goodbye
and raced back toward the city

Granny's mind was getting more and more muddled
Lina would come home in the evenings and find her

Granny didn't try to answer this questionShe just

Every week, Lina--like all workers between age

Thursday, as she was standing in line at the Garn

that night, she overheard a startling conversation
between two people standing behind her
"What I balenciaga first wanted," said one voice, "was some paint

"Blue would be nice," said the other voice wistfully

"But when I got there," the first voice continued,
"the man said he had no paint, never hadAll he had were a few colored pencils
Colored pencils! Lina had not seen colored pencils
in any store for agesOnce she'd had two red ones, a

she had only one plain pencil left, and it was rapidly

|
| She told us that, as we knew, she spent most of her time in
the London Library, readingShe had begun, she said, with English
literature on the top floor; and was steadily working her way down to the
Times on the bottomAnd now half, or perhaps only a quarter, way through
a terrible thing had happenedShe could read no moreBooks were not
what we thought them"Books," she cried, rising to her feet and speaking
with an intensity of desolation which I shall never forget, "are for the
most part unutterably bad!"
Of course we cried out that Shakespeare wrote books, and Milton and
Shelley
"Oh, yes," she interrupted us"You've been well taught, I can seeBut
you are not members of the London Library Here her sobs broke forth
anewAt length, recovering a little, she opened one of the pile of books
which she always carried about with her--"From a Window" or "In a Garden,"
or some such name as that it was called, and it was written by a man
called Benton or Henson, or something of that kindShe read the first
few pagesWe listened chanel jewellery in silence"But that's not a book," someone said
So she chose anotherThis time it was a history, but I have forgotten
the writer's nameOur trepidation increased as she went onNot a word
of it seemed to be true, and the style in which it was written was
execrable
"Poetry! Poetry!" we cried, impatiently
"Read us poetry!" I cannot describe the desolation which fell upon us as
she opened a little volume and mouthed out the verbose, sentimental
foolery which it contained
"It must have been written by a woman," one of us urgedShe told
us that it was written by a young man, one of the most famous poets of
the dayI leave you to imagine what the shock of the discovery was
Though we all cried and begged her to read no more, she persisted and
read us extracts from the Lives of the Lord ChancellorsWhen she had
finished, Jane, the eldest and wisest of us, rose to her feet and said
that she for one was not convinced
"Why," she asked, "if men write such rubbish as this, should our mothers
have wasted their youth in bringing classic chanel handbag them into the world?"
We were all silent; and, in the silence, poor Poll could be heard sobbing
out, "Why, why did my father teach me to read?"
Clorinda was the first to come to her senses"It's all our fault," she
said"Every one of us knows how to readBut no one, save Poll, has ever
taken the trouble to do itI, for one, have taken it for granted that it
was a woman's duty to spend her youth in bearing childrenI venerated my
mother for bearing ten; still more my grandmother for bearing fifteen; it
was, I confess, my own ambition to bear twentyWe have gone on all these
ages supposing that men were equally industrious, and that their works
were of equal meritWhile we have borne the children, they, we supposed,
have borne the books and the picturesWe have populated the worldThey
have civilized itBut now that we can read, what prevents us from
judging the results? Before we bring another child into the world we must
swear that we will find out what the world is like
So we made ourselves into a society for asking kelly handbag questionsOne of us was
to visit a man-of-war; another was to hide herself in a scholar's study;
another was to attend a meeting of business men; while all were to read
books, look at pictures, go to concerts, keep our eyes open in the
streets, and ask questions perpetuallyYou can judge
of our simplicity when I tell you that before parting that night we
agreed that the objects of life were to produce good people and good
booksOur questions were to be directed to finding out how far these
objects were now attained by menWe vowed solemnly that we would not
bear a single child until we were satisfied
Off we went then, some to the British Museum; others to the King's Navy;
some to Oxford; others to Cambridge; we visited the Royal Academy and the
Tate; heard modern music in concert rooms, went to the Law Courts, and
saw new playsNo one dined out without asking her partner certain
questions and carefully noting his repliesAt intervals we met together
and compared our observationsOh, those were merry meeting! Never have chanel white ceramic watch I
laughed so much as I did when Rose read her notes upon "Honour" and
described how she had dressed herself as an Ethiopian Prince and gone
aboard one of His Majesty's shipsDiscovering the hoax, the Captain
visited her (now disguised as a private gentleman) and demanded that
honour should be satisfied
"With the cane of course!" Seeing that he was beside himself with rage
and expecting that her last moment had come, she bent over and received,
to her amazement, six light taps upon the behind"The honour of the
British Navy is avenged!" he cried, and, raising herself, she saw him
with the sweat pouring down his face holding out a trembling right hand
"Away!" she exclaimed, striking an attitude and imitating the ferocity of
his own expression, "My honour has still to be satisfied!" "Spoken like a
gentleman!" he returned, and fell into profound thought"If six strokes
avenge the honour of the King's Navy," he mused, "how many avenge the
honour of a private gentleman?" He said he would prefer to lay the case

| The ground was alive with insects--so
many that Doon just laughed in helpless wonder
Flowers bloomed among the green blades, and a
stream ran at the foot of the hillThey roamed over the
green-coated slopes, running, sliding, calling out to
each other with each new discovery, until they were
exhaustedThen they sat down by the entrance to the
path to eat what was left of their foodThey untied
Doon's bundle, and Lina suddenly cried out"The
book! We forgot about the book!"
There it was, wrapped in its blotched green cloth
"Let's read it out loud while we eat," said Doon
Lina opened the fragile notebook and laid it on
the ground in front of herShe picked up a carrot with
one hand, and with the other she kept her place on the

CHAPTER 20
The Last Message
Friday
They tell us we leave tonightI knew it
would be soon--the training has been over for
nearly a month now--but still it feels sudden,
it feels like a shockWhy did I agree to do this?
I am an old woman, too tired to take up a
new lifeI wish now that I'd said no when they
asked me
I have put everything I can into my one
suitcase--clothes, shoes, a good wind-up clock,
some soap, an extra pair of glassesBring no
books, they said, and no photographsWe have
been told to say nothing, ever again, about the
world we come fromBut I am going to take this
notebook anyhowI am determined to write
down what happensSomeday, someone may
need to know

Saturday
I went to the train station chanel earrings fake yesterday
evening, as they told me to, and got on the train
they told me to takeIt took us through Spring
Valley, and I gazed out the window at the fields
and houses of the place I was saying goodbye
to--my home, and my family's home for
generationsI rode for two hours, until the train
reached a station in the hillsWhen I arrived,
they met me--three men in suits--and drove
me to a large building, where they led me
down a corridor and into a big room full of
other people--all with suitcases, most with gray
or white hairHere we have been waiting now
for more than an hour
They have spent years and years making
this planIt's supposed to ensure that, no
matter what happens, people won't disappear
from the earthSome say that will never happen
anyhowDisaster seems chanel vintage jewelry very
closeEverything will be all right, they teU us,
but only a few people believe themWhy, if it's
going to be all right, do we see it getting worse
every day?
And of course this plan is proof that they
think the world is doomedAll the best scientists
and engineers have been pulled in to work on it
Extraordinary efforts have been made--efforts
259
that would have done more good elsewhereI
think it's the wrong answerBut they asked me
if I would go--I suppose because I've spent my
life on a farm and I know about growing food
In spite of my doubts, I said yes
There are a hundred of us, fifty men and
fifty womenWe are all at least sixty years old
There will be a hundred babies, too--two
babies for each pair of "parents I don't know
yet which one of these chanel clearance gentlemen I'll be matched
withWe are all strangers to one anotherThey
planned it that way; they said there would be
fewer memories between usThey want us to
forget everything about the lives we've led and
the places we've livedThe babies must grow up
with no knowledge of a world outside, so that
they feel no sorrow for what they have lost
I hear some noises across the roomI think
it's the babies arrivingYes, here they come,
each being carried by one of those gray-suited
menSo many of them! So small! Little
scrunched-up faces, tiny fists wavingThey're going to pass them out
Later
We're traveling again, on a bus this timeIt
is night, I think, though it's hard to be sure
260
because they have boarded up the windows of
the bus from the chanel 2.55 bag outsid |

Beneath the window was a brown stain made by the

A couple of shelves beside the window held Lina's

for drawing, her pencils, a scarf tiffany co earrings with a silver
thread woven through itOn the parts of the wall that
had no hooks and no shelves, she had pinned up some
of her pictures
"What are those?" Doon asked
"They're from my imagination," Lina said, feeling
slightly embarrassed"They're pictures of

"OhSometimes I dream of it
"I draw, too" said Doon"But I draw other kinds

"Like what?"
"Mostly insects" said DoonHe told her about his collection of drawings and the worm he was currently

I saidShe lifted the metal boxBefore she could reach

"Where did this come from?" he asked
"It was in the closet," Lina saidShe told him about
Granny's wild search and about finding the box with
its lid open and Poppy with paper in her mouthAs she
talked, Doon turned the box over in his hands, opened
and closed its lid, and peered at the latch
"There's some sort of odd mechanism here," he
saidHe tapped at a small metal compartment at the
front of the box"I'd like to see inside this
"Here's replica pasha cartier what was in the box," said Lina, lifting the
covering paper from her patchwork of scraps"At least,
it's what's left of what was in there
Doon bent over, his hands on either side of the
paper

Lina said, "It's called 'Instructions for Egreston'
Or maybe 'Egresman' Someone's name, anyhow
Maybe a mayor, or a guardI just call it 'The Instructions'
I told the mayor about it--I thought maybe it
was importantI wrote him a note, but he hasn't
answeredI don't think he's interested
Doon said nothing
"You don't have to hold your breath," said Lina"I
glued the pieces downLook," she said, omega 18k watch pointing |
